16. Unwind, Rewind

He found her waiting for him. He wondered at the reality of this. All things have their truth, and all things have their illusions. Djonny wondered which side he would see first. The truth, he hoped, would be exactly what he was seeing now.

Her eyes were brighter somehow. Or was he seeing them for the first time? Had those eyes always been so quick to catch the light? Did the light always dance there? He shook his head to clear it and found the perception was not something like dizziness that could be mastered physically. He had to clear this feeling some other way, or accept it.

Roxie reached out with something in her hand as an offering. Her eyes followed him as he approached. When he was close enough, he accepted it. It was a small mp3 player.

“I thought since I lost some of your music earlier you might like this,” she said.

“Where did you get it?”

“It’s mine. I’ve had it in my locker for a while, but I haven’t used it lately.”

“What does it have on it?”

“Girly music,” she said and laughed.

“Am I going to regret this?”

“Of course not, silly. Why don’t you look through it and see if there’s anything you can use?”

Interrupting them from behind came a voice so similar to Pam’s that Djonny thought it was her. “Aren’t you going to introduce me?”

Roxie’s head drooped. “Sorry. Djonny, this is my friend, Toni. Remember I said I knew someone . . .”

“Hello. I’m Djonny. I’m the deejay.”

“That’s far out,” Toni said, staring openly at Djonny’s lips, which hadn’t moved.

Roxie laughed.

“What?” Toni asked.

“Nothing.”

“Ayden . . . isn’t here,” Djonny said, as if the whole operation hinged on Ayden’s presence. He knew it didn’t, but he wasn’t altogether comfortable with Toni. She had curves like a girl, but there was something not quite right with those curves—and staring at them was not the way to figure out what was so out of balance.

As if to tip the scales herself, Toni asked, “Can I try? Where do you want it?”

“Not here either,” Djonny said, looking around.

“Right,” Roxie agreed, “I know where.”

She led the way, and Djonny followed. Toni came, skipping along beside them.

When they got to the third-floor girl’s bathroom, Roxie turned to Djonny as if expecting him to protest.

He eased her worry. “This will do just fine . . . but first things first . . .” He turned to find the nearest security camera, gave it the okay sign, and held the door for Toni and Roxie.

On the other side of the door, Toni pointed at Djonny and said, “I must have stepped into heaven, because you are an angel.”

Roxie gave her friend the concerned eyes, but with fire behind them. It was apparent she hadn’t seen this side of her friend before. “Keep it cool, Toni,” she warned.

“Aah,” Toni sighed, “I know what you mean. It is so hot in here.” She fanned herself with a flat hand and slid closer to Djonny. “So, now, where do you want it?”

“You have a paint pen?” Roxie asked.
